PRSA Orlando Newsletter

July 2007

President's Message

Lorelie Johnson, APR, PresidentDear Colleagues,

July is here! We are quickly moving past the halfway point of this year and entering a very exciting time for our chapter for so many reasons. Right now, there are two specific opportunities that everyone should be talking about for the next few weeks.

First, the Sunshine District Conference (July 26-28) is being held in our own backyard. So far, we have 81 professionals registered and a fantastic speaker line-up. People from all over the Sunshine District, that includes the seven chapters throughout Florida, will be there. A VIP Reception is being given to us by our friends at Walt Disney World. There will be professional development opportunities galore and non-stop networking for all in attendance. I highly encourage all of you who have yet to register to please visit the conference website and consider signing up today.

Second, the PRSA Orlando/Frank R. Stansberry Ethics Award will be presented at our September luncheon. Past winners include Massey Services (2005) and Florida's Blood Centers (2006). We are in search of our 2007 recipient. If you know of a company or a client who has outstanding local ethical practices, visit our website to download the nomination form. The deadline is Friday, August 17. For further information, please send an email to ethics_award@prsaorlando.org.

Finally, thank you for choosing to stay involved in your local professional community through PRSA. We value each and every one of you. I hope to meet our new members and see all of you at upcoming PRSA events.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Lorelie Johnson, APR

Ten Minutes/Ten Questions

Elaine Hinsdale

Name: Elaine Hinsdale

Occupation: Director of Communications, Lockheed Martin Corp.

PRSA Involvement: Member

Person who has most influenced your life: My high school business teacher, who helped me land a job in Washington, DC when I was 17 years old.

Quote to live by: "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." —Albert Einstein

What made you choose PR as a profession? At James Madison University (in Virginia) I was a communications major and a member of IABC so my interests were already leaning towards the PR field. Thus, after spending time at The Washington Post, and then overseas as a broadcast journalist, I decided to hone my communication skills in the corporate environment.

Best PR advice you ever received: Know your audience — then you can tailor your message appropriately and effectively.

Greatest accomplishment: Mentoring early-career professionals and instilling in them the basics of good writing and editing skills. It's gratifying to hear from them years later that I made a difference or helped shape their career in some way.

Favorite thing to do on the weekend: Read the Sunday newspaper front to back with a big cup of coffee

Something nobody really knows about you: One summer I traveled around the world in 42 days!

To learn more about Elaine's career, tune in to PRSA's PR Giants on August 15.
