PRSA Orlando Newsletter

August 2007

President's Message

Lorelie Johnson

Dear Colleagues,

As you can tell from the photo, I had such a great time catching up with friends at this year's Sunshine District Conference. There were over 100 professionals from Florida in attendance. Everything from the VIP Reception to the professional development sessions and lunch at the California Grill was spectacular! If you missed it, take a moment to check out prsaorlando.org/hdpr and read all about it on the first ever Sunshine District Conference Blog.

Our chapter continues to stay focused on providing the best professional development opportunities to all of you. Here's what's happening in the next few months that may be of interest:

August 16: Monthly Luncheon - PR News Editor Courtney Barnes will share with us the state of the profession at our luncheon. Also, we've invited the BETA Center to briefly chat with us about their mission and current needs. This is an opportunity for you to give back so keep reading the newsletter for more information on how to do that on the 16th.

August 17: Ethics Award Nominations Due - If you haven't already, this is your chance to nominate your company or one that you know that has outstanding ethical practices for the 2007 PRSA Orlando/Frank R. Stansberry Ethics Award.

August 31: Speed Mentoring Workshop - The first ever Speed Mentoring Workshop is being held at Park Plaza Gardens. This event will officially kick off our Chapter Mentoring program.

September 10: APR Meet and Mingle - Along with FPRA, we are hosting the second APR Meet and Mingle at Bennett and Co. If you've ever thought about accreditation and have unanswered questions about the process, this is the event for you.

September 20: All About Ethics at the Monthly Luncheon and the PRSA Orlando/Frank R. Stansberry Ethics Award Presentation - This year's Ethics Award recipient will be recognized at the luncheon. In addition, our Ethics Chair Allen Moore and our Program Chairs Sabrina Heise and Mason Moore are working together on this year's program. More details to follow.

October 20-23: PRSA 2007 International Conference - Tim Russert and Mia Farrow are among some of the speakers at this year's conference being held in Philadelphia, PA. If you register before Sept. 7, you save $200. Visit www.prsa.org/conf2007.

With all of this on the calendar and more to come, I'm sure to see you at a PRSA event very soon. Until then, have a wonderful month!

Lorelie Johnson, APR

The State of the PR Profession

A Keynote Presentation by Courtney Barnes, Editor of PR News

Is our industry growing? Why or why not? What practice areas are emerging as most critical? What are the top issues affecting us as public relations professionals? How do we respond? What are the trends driving our industry? What challenges and opportunities do they bring?

Learn about these top-of-mind issues and topics for our profession at PRSA Orlando's don't-miss August 16 luncheon program. PR News Editor Courtney Barnes will take us through this discussion and much more, including work and campaigns that got it right, others that missed the boat, and where PR pros continue to err.

Barnes writes about corporate communications and public relations, with particular expertise in digital communications, integration and leadership/management issues. She also edited the PR News "100 Top Case Studies Guidebook" and is currently editing the "Digital PR Guidebook." In addition to her writing and editing responsibilities, Barnes moderates PR News Webinars, facilitates the brand's Thought Leaders Strategic Integration Roundtables, and speaks at industry events.

Everyone attending the program will receive a complimentary current issue of PR News. The program will conclude with a Q&A session.

As part of PRSA Orlando's new initiative, "CHATTING UP A CHARITY," guests attending this month's program can help support BETA Center. BETA Center's mission is to give our community's children and parents the knowledge and support needed for strong and healthy families. BETA Center has served the Central Florida community for over 31 years. It provides services for pregnant and parenting girls, residential shelter, emergency services, parenting classes, neighborhood prevention services and much more!

A BETA representative will be on hand to accept items from their wish list including all types of non-perishable food, baby items, toiletries, children's books and office/art supplies.

Thank you for your support.

Ten Minutes/Ten Questions

Carol Clark

Name: Carol Clark

Occupation: Marketing Program Coordinator, Orange County Parks & Recreation Division

PRSA Involvement: Member

Person who has most influenced your life: My grandmother. She taught me that hard work and dedication is the key. She would always say to me, "Your name will travel further than you ever will." I have seen it and I believe it.

Quote to live by: "When you know better—you do better." I will have to attribute that to Oprah because I don't know where she got it from.

What made you choose PR as a profession? As a former television journalist, I wanted a career that was more conducive to family life. With PR I have the opportunity to continue to write but I also have the opportunity to be creative.

Best PR advice you ever received: Know your audience and believe in your mission.

Greatest accomplishment: My daughter and winning a first place New York State Associated Press Award. The AP award was for the best non-breaking spot news for my story on a soldier killed aboard the USS Iowa. I volunteered to cover the story because of the ship's name. My hometown in Illinois is across the Mississippi River from Iowa.

Favorite thing to do on the weekend: Watching movies.

Something nobody really knows about you: I love to garden. When I am gardening my thoughts get lost in the flowers, the mulch and the dreadful weeds that have to go!
