President's Message

Dawn_Vaughan_LowResDear Colleagues,

When I first moved to Orlando in 1984, it was still what could be considered a small town. You can imagine how different the landscape was back then. Downtown was virtually a one-light wasteland and the corner of Red Bug Road and State Road 436 was a field - with cows!

Since then, our community has experienced a tremendous amount of growth and there seems to be no end in sight, despite the so-called impending recession. Just take Lake Nona, for example. At one time in the not-too-distant past, Lake Nona was simply an exclusive Country Club on the (very) outskirts of town, nestled among old oaks and pines. Today, as we all know, Lake Nona is a magnet for residential and commercial growth, and the heart of a new biomedical cluster that has put Orlando on the map.

Personally, I think growth is a good thing (within limits, of course). As PR professionals, it provides us with greater opportunities to enhance the services and offerings we provide current clients, and to grow and develop relationships for our employers that are beneficial to our companies, our community and our members.

I'm looking forward to hearing from Rob Adams, VP of Marketing and Public Relations for Lake Nona, as he discusses the value the Medical City is bringing to our community, not only on a professional level, but more importantly, to us all as individuals from a health perspective.

I hope you'll join us on Wednesday, February 20, for this update on the health and well being of our community and what's in store for us at Lake Nona.

Dawn Vaughan, APR

Chatting Up A Charity

February's "Chatting Up A Charity" recipient is Give Kids The World Village (GKTW). Suzie Storey, fellow PRSA Orlando member and GKTW communications director, will join us Feb. 20 to share how we can make a difference in the lives of children with life- threatening illnesses and their families.

Located in Kissimmee, the nonprofit organization creates magical memories through accommodations at a whimsical 70-acre resort, donated attractions tickets, meals and more for a complimentary week-long fantasy vacation. More than 85,000 families from all 50 states and more than 60 countries have experienced the magic of Central Florida since GKTW was created in 1986.

As a PRSA Orlando member you can make a difference. Disposable cameras, blank CDs, 8-packs of crayons and umbrellas are just a few of the small items that bring big smiles to the faces of visiting families. If you'd like to help, please bring your donation to the February meeting.

Ten Minutes/Ten Questions

Laura_Richeson_Feb10/10Name: Laura E. Richeson, APR

Occupation: Senior Vice President, Bennett & Company

PRSA involvement: Counselors Academy Member; Travel & Tourism Section Member; Orlando Chapter, Vice President of Accreditation, 2007 and 2008; Orlando Chapter Assembly Delegate, 2007

Quote to live by: "Make it work" by fashion mentor Tim Gunn on Bravo TV's "Project Runway." In three simple words, it says so much as a reminder to stay focused on the solution, not the problem. Whether it is an international marketing campaign or crisis communications in action, just "make it work."

Greatest accomplishment: To date, my greatest accomplishment professionally is achieving my Accreditation in Public Relations. Professional development is essential to staying at the top of your game and I hope to inspire others to pursue this distinctive honor as well. (See above story on the Feb. 25 APR orientation workshop)

Favorite thing to do on the weekend: My color-coded calendar is filled to the brim with many other "titles" including; sister, friend, daughter, godmother, fitness buff, aunt, neighbor, mentor, homeowner, pet lover, Food Network junkie, novice runner, boater, home renovator and all around believer in a work hard, play hard mentality. So, whatever the weekend might bring, my favorite thing to do is stay "on the go."

Something nobody really knows about you: At the tender age of 13, I was featured in the Washington Post with a group of friends as part of a teen fashion story. My family helped me prepare my key messages and conversation pointers so I would put my best foot forward during the interview. And that was my official launch into media relations.

Media Spotlight

Featured Guest: Harry Wessel, The Orlando Sentinel

Harry_Wessel_FebMediaSpotlightWelcome to the Media Spotlight¸ your way of glimpsing an insider's view of the inner workings of Central Florida's diverse and changing media. Each month we'll chat with a different reporter, assignment editor, or writer. February's guest columnist is Harry Wessel from The Orlando Sentinel.

Describe your role?
I cover health care and work place issues for the Sentinel's business section.

What time/day is best to call?
Late morning or early afternoon on weekdays.

How do you like to be contacted?
E-mail first, phone second, snail-mail third, faxes almost never, and only with my approval.

Which topics are hot right now? Which are not?
Health care is pretty much always a hot topic, with the prospect (or specter, depending on your point of view) of universal health care somewhere near the top.

What's your most memorable experience with a PR person?
I've had mostly good experiences with PR people. Most of them understand my job, and I certainly understand theirs. What I don't understand is a PR person sending out a press release and not being accessible for follow-up questions. That should never happen, but it does.

Anything else you'd like PRSA Orlando members to know?
Think like a reporter. Ask yourself what makes your pitch a good story to general interest readers. Once you've figured that out, remember that we reporters need facts, and the story we build around those facts needs to be timely. The story you pitch also has a better chance of good play and good length if the reporter is given access to the people he or she really needs to talk to. And (nothing personal), that is not you.
